English: Stenhouse, Edinburgh. An early 17thC merchant's house, built by the Stenhope family in 1623 and extended by a subsequent owner, Patrick Ellis, the City Treasurer. He added the protruding central wing and a further extension with forestairs seen on the right. Time has been unkind to the house which has had to be rescued more than once. By 1900, it had become a sub-divided slum dwelling, rented out to labourers. Shortly before the Second World War it was acquired by the National Trust, but during the war years fell again into disrepair. By the mid-60s it had been fully restored and was for many years used as a restoration workshop by the Ancient Monuments Division of the Scottish Development Department (which became Historic Scotland in the late-1980s). It is currently occupied by administrative staff of the Trust.
