CHARLES ANDERSON DANA. Assistant Secretary of War to Secretary Stanton,and for many years previous to his death the editor of the New York Sun, was one ofthe really great journalists of his time, he being particularly noted for the bitterness withwhich he carried on controversies, personal and political, through the columns of hispaper. As Secretaiy Stantons assistant he was of much aid to President Lincoln andthe War Department in reporting, after visiting the headquarters of commanding generalsin the field, the true state of affairs. He was called the eyes of the War Department.He was born in New Hampshire in 1819. and died in 1897. (352)

SHERIDAN, the greatest cavalry commander the world ever knew, wasa special favorite with President Lincoln, who admired his capability, push and gallantry.Sheridan was but thirty-three years old when he performed the feat of beating Early atWinchester. Later, when he telegraphed Grant that he could smash the enemy if hepushed things. and was ordered by Grant to push things, he was instrumental inbringing about Lees surrender. He was created General of the Army in 1884. and diedin 1888. at the age of fifty-seven. He was a native of New York. (243)
