DeskribapenaSoho, Golden Square, W1 - geograph.org.uk - 530206.jpg
English: Soho: Golden Square, W1 According to its notice board, the name Golden Square appears to have been derived from the word Gelding as the area was originally used to graze horses. A building licence for the land was granted in 1673 and development was initiated by two speculators, John Emlyn and Isaac Symball. In 1720 the square was described as "a very handsome place railed round and gravelled with many very good houses inhabited by gentry on all sides". Contemporary pictures certainly bear this out. However by the 1750s the more fashionable addresses were to be found in the Burlington estates further to the west.
Charles Dickens chose the square as the setting for Ralph Nickleby's gloomy house in "Nicholas Nickleby" in 1839. Dickens described the square by this time as a "little wilderness of shrubs" watched over by a "mournful statue". The statue itself was erected in 1753 and is said to represent Charles II.
