English: Clissold House and the New River Clissold Mansion dates back to the 1790s when it was built for Jonathan Hoare, of the local Quaker community. With its handsome Doric pillared balcony and its yellow brickwork (fashionable at the time), it was situated to overlook a curve in what was then a respectable-sized, if artificial river, now reduced to a short stagnant stretch at this point.
In 1811 the house passed into the ownership of the Crawshay family, one of whose daughters married the Reverend Augustus Clissold, who on acquiring ownership of the estate, changed the name from Crawshay's Farm to Clissold Place. It now serves as the park's refreshment rooms.
