Deutsch: „Das Stadtwappen zeigt oben in Gold den schreitenden schwarzen Löwen von Jülich; unten ist in Rot und Gold geschacht.“ die korrekte Blasonierung muss lauten: „Im goldenen (gelben) geteilten Schild oben ein rot gezungter und rot bewehrter schwarzer Löwe, unten in drei Reihen zu je fünf Feldern geschacht von Rot und Gold (Gelb).“ Das Wappen basiert auf dem Schöffensiegel aus dem Jahre 1392. Der schwarze Löwe steht für die frühere Zugehörigkeit zum Herzogtum Jülich; die geschachte untere Hälfte stammt aus dem Wappen der Herren von Randerath, welche den Ort Jahrhunderte lang prägten und beherrschten.
English: „The town became a city in 1358 and was ruled until 1392 by the Lords of Randerath. The oldest, late 13th century, seal shows the arms of the Lords of Randerath, a chequered shield of 25 fields. The second seal, which dates from the early 15th century, shows the present arms, only with a crowned lion. The lion is the lion of Jülich, as in 1392 the town became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich. The present arms, with the uncrowned lion, are in use since the 18th century.“
