Deskribapena
English: John IV of Brittany
Français : Tombeau de Jean IV de Bretagne (la légende indique "Jean V", comme on lui appele en Angleterre). Drawing c.1700 of English-made effigy of John IV the Conqueror, KG, (in Breton Yann IV, in French Jean IV, and traditionally in English sources both John of Montfort and John V) (1339-1399), Duke of Brittany and Count of Montfort from 1345 until his death and 7th Earl of Richmond from 1372 until his death. On white arcaded chest tomb, Nantes Cathedral. Original monument destroyed. Drawing by Roger de Gaignières.(Bodleian Library Oxford, catalogue entry, based on J. Bertram, Gough's Sepulchral Monuments (unpublished, 2004)).

Source: Tombeaux des princes et princesses du sang royal de France ("Gaignières drawings"). Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Shelfmark: MS. Gough Drawings Gaignières 1 Folio/page: 102, Date: c. 1700. Catalogue entry:

These drawings are part of 16 large volumes of drawings prepared for Roger de Gaignières, in the late 17th to early 18th centuries. These Oxford volumes were somehow separated from the rest of the collection now in the Bibliothèque nationale (Paris). Most are done lightly in pencil, then overdrawn in ink, and coloured with watercolour. Not all the drawings are by the same artist. They were presented by Gaignières to Louis XIV in 1711. These drawings are sometimes the only evidence left for some lost monuments. The present Description: (based on J. Bertram, Gough's Sepulchral Monuments (unpublished, 2004)) "Nantes, Cathedral. John V, Duc de Bretagne, d. 1399. Armed effigy, English style, on white arcaded tomb. Head rests on helm, lion at his feet, dagger and sword. This tomb was made in England and is documented. Original lost".(See also:J. Adhémar and G. Dordor (eds.), 'Tombeaux de la Collection Gaignières', in Gazette des Beaux Arts, 1974-7, in which this drawing is number 970)
