Tobias Brooklynen jaio zen, New Yorken,[1] eta Paul Tobias eta Rose Steinberger Tobiasen alaba zaharrena izan zen.[2] 1957an Radcliffe Collegen graduatu zen eta Columbiako Unibertsitateko bi master eskuratu zituen (bata Arteetan 1961ean eta bestea Filosofian 1974an).[3]

Tobias kazetaria izan zen Alemanian eta Londresen unibertsitatearen ondoren, New York Herald Tribune-rako idatzi zuen,[4] eta historia ikastaroak eman zituen New Yorkeko City Collegen. Tobias Carlos Sternekin ezkondu zen 1970ean; 1982an dibortziatu ziren. Fisikako irakasle batekin ezkondu zen, Carl Tomizukarekin, 1987an, eta 2017an hil zen.
